Friendship Pole

Designed and carved by Ernie Puglas at Klahoose First Nation, the Pole was commissioned for the Village Commons. For more information, watch the video online.

Sculptural Garden

Made from locally donated lumber, as well as driftwood and cedar, the sculptural garden was designed for children and adults to connect with our forest and engage in play!

Village Commons

The “Village Commons” is 2.6 acres that sits at the heart of the village of Manson’s Landing, tucked alongside Manson’s  Hall and numerous island institutions e.g. Cortes Community Radio Station, the Fire Hall, the Rainbow Ridge land and near to the Seniors Village, skate park, school, and Health Clinic, and both stores.

On June 27th 2025 the Cortes Foundation celebrated the opening of the Village Commons. With special thanks to all those that helped make the day special including the Klahoose singers, dancers, and leaders and representatives from many of the Cortes organizations and lots of music.

It’s been a long journey to now that involved hundreds of hours of work, passion, and collaboration. A special thanks to the original Cortes Foundation board members, the Housing Society, and CCEDA that helped in the stewarding of this land before it landed in the hands of the Cortes Foudnation in January 2023. Thanks to CCEDA and Kate Maddigan it came to the Foundation with three significant grants in place including the Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program (REDIP), Destination Development Fund (DDF), and IslandCoastal Trust ICE-T to help realize the social and economic potential of this important space. Since then additional donations from the community and gas tax fund from the Strathcona Regional District have been instrumental in realizing this new community space.
