Ideas that connect neighbours – MicroGrants for Neighbours is designed to spark creativity within our community. In 2023 we were able to fund 13 different projects, which helped support childcare, encourage learning surrounding gender diversity, food security, free tech support, and more! A donation as small as $50 could be enough to get a project running!
Community-Led Death Care – The Cortes Island Death Collective is seeking donations to achieve their goal of integrating death as a natural part of life in our island community.

With over 30 nonprofits on our small island, these essential supports can only happen with a huge engagement from local volunteers.
Contribute to our Social Profit Network fund so we can host this year’s Volunteer Appreciation Party in style!
Every donation given this week will be matched by a generous donor! (up to $1000). Donating to our Climate Adaptation and Energy Initiative Fund will allow the CICF to run community grants that focus on sustainability.
This week, donations will be collected on behalf of the Emily Ellingsen Scholarship Fund. Emily’s annual memorial bursaries support Cortes Island students in their pursuit of post-secondary education. There have been 13 cycles of this scholarship, supporting many of our islands best and brightest. Your donation will be matched (up to $20,000)
During week 3 we focussed on highlighting the Cortes Housing Society.
The Cortes Housing Society is working to create a variety of housing solutions on Cortes, from affordable home ownership for people to build their own homes on leased land owned by the housing society, to rentals owned by the housing society, and updated zoning bylaws that support more housing being built on privately owned land. The Cortes Housing Society recently created a community land trust and purchased an existing property that might otherwise have been purchased by summer visitors. By bringing the property into community ownership, the two existing homes will be used to provide much needed island housing, one of which will accommodate Cortes locum doctors in partnership with the Cortes Community Health Association (CCHA).
For week 2 of the campaign we highlighted the Village Commons Music Series!
The Village Commons Music Series is run by a partnership between the Cortes Foundation and Cortes Radio. The series offers free live music events every Friday throughout the summer in the Village Commons tent. It enlivens our farmer’s market, provides vital paid work for local musicians, and is live-broadcast on CKTZ.
